The Route from Marrakech to Merzouga: Day by Day
Most tourists visit Merzouga on a 3-day tour from Marrakech, which is the most popular and efficient option. There is also the option of doing it in 2 days (more intense) or including it in a longer 7 or 10-day circuit.
Marrakech → Ait Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate → Dadès Valley
Early departure from Marrakech (7:00am). We cross the spectacular Tichka Pass (2,260m altitude) with breathtaking Atlas views. First stop at Ait Ben Haddou, the most famous earthen kasbah in the world (used in Game of Thrones and Gladiator). We continue to Ouarzazate, the "Hollywood of the Desert". In the afternoon, we wind through the dramatic Dadès Canyon to our accommodation.
Dadès Valley → Todra Gorges → Ziz Valley → Merzouga
After breakfast, we visit the imposing Todra Gorges, where the rock walls rise 300 metres on either side. We continue through the Ziz Valley, with its endless palm groves, before arriving in Merzouga in the late afternoon. Just in time to climb the dunes and witness the Sahara sunset, a spectacle of orange and red light you will never forget.

The highlight of the tour: waking before sunrise for the camel ride to the highest dunes. Watching the sun paint the horizon in impossible colours as the silence of the desert envelops you is a truly transformative experience. Breakfast at the camp and departure to Marrakech via the southern route.
Expert Tip
If you have more time, add an extra day in Merzouga to explore the surrounding Berber villages, Lake Dayet Srji (where you can see pink flamingos in spring) and the traditional windmills. It is well worth it.

This is one of the most important decisions of your trip. There is an enormous difference between a basic camp and a luxury camp. Here is what sets the best apart:

- Thin fabric tents with no insulation against the night cold
- Very basic shared bathrooms or no hot water

When to Visit the Merzouga Desert? Best Time to Go
The desert climate is extreme. Knowing the best time can make the difference between a magical experience and a difficult one.
- Spring (March–May): The perfect time. Pleasant temperatures (20–30°C during the day), cool nights, wildflowers. Ideal for families.
- Autumn (September–November): Excellent too. The summer heat has dropped, warm colours, fewer tourists than spring.
- Winter (December–February): Spectacular sunny days but very cold nights (can freeze). You need warm clothing. Fewer tourists.
- Summer (June–August): Not recommended. Temperatures of 45–50°C. The camel ride is done at dawn or sunset to avoid the extreme heat.
What to Pack for the Desert: Complete Checklist
- Lightweight long-sleeved clothing to protect against the sun (sand reflects light)
- Warm clothing for the night (even in spring it can drop to 5–10°C)
- Scarf/bandana to protect face and neck from dust and sandstorms
- Sunglasses of good quality with UV protection
- SPF50+ sunscreen — the desert sun is very intense
- Moisturiser — sand is very drying for the skin
- Comfortable footwear — when walking on sand, open shoes fill with sand. Closed trainers or buckled sandals are best
- Powerbank — camps have limited electricity
- Camera — there is no more photogenic landscape in Morocco
- Cash in dirhams — there are no ATMs in the dunes
Best Times to Photograph the Desert
The golden hour (30 minutes before sunset and after sunrise) is when the light creates long shadows on the dunes and the colours turn magical. Climb the highest dune and wait — the photos you will get are magazine-cover quality.
