What We Visit in the Medina

An itinerary designed by our local guide to discover the Red City like a Moroccan — with priority access to monuments, no queues and stories you won't find in any travel guide.

🌺
Majorelle Gardens — The World's Most Famous Blue
Morocco's most visited garden, created by French painter Jacques Majorelle and later restored by Yves Saint Laurent. A 1-hectare oasis with the iconic Majorelle blue, giant bamboos, collection palms and the Berber Museum. The YSL boutique in the gardens and the mausoleum where the designer's ashes rest complete the visit.

🏛️
Bahia Palace — The Vizier's Palace
Built in the 19th century by Vizier Si Moussa to be the most beautiful palace in Morocco. 8 hectares of gardens, 160 rooms decorated with zellige, carved plasterwork and painted cedar. The guide tells the story of the vizier, his four wives and 24 concubines who lived here, and why the palace is named "The Brilliant" in Arabic.

Saadian Tombs — The Secret 16th-Century Mausoleum
Discovered by accident in 1917, the Saadian Tombs are the mausoleum of the sultans of the Saadian dynasty (16th century). 66 tombs decorated with zellige mosaics, carved plasterwork and carved cedar of incredible precision. Sultan Ahmed al-Mansur had them built with pure gold — the hall of the 12 columns is one of the most beautiful places in all of Morocco.

📚
Ben Youssef Madrasa — Morocco's Largest
Morocco's largest Quranic school (14th century, expanded in the 16th), capable of housing 900 students. Three levels of Islamic art at its finest: marble dado, pierced plasterwork walls with Quranic inscriptions and carved cedar ceilings. The central courtyard with its green water pool is one of Marrakech's most photogenic images.

🛍️
Artisan Souks — The Labyrinth of the Senses
We walk through the medina's specialised souks: the dyers' souk (colourful fabrics and babouches), the spice souk (Rahba Kedima, with spices and medicinal plants), the brass and copper souk (Smarine) and the cedar carpenters' souk. The guide teaches you to tell authentic crafts from imported goods and how to negotiate a fair price.
⏱ 50 min · Shopping optional
🌅
Jemaa el-Fna — The Heart of Morocco at Sunset
Africa's most famous square, declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. At sunset it transforms: hundreds of food stalls appear, storytellers (halqa) draw crowds, Gnawa musicians play their ancestral songs and the smell of spices and grilled meat fills the air. The guide introduces the square's characters and recounts the legends of this unique space.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time to visit Marrakech Medina?

We recommend starting at 9:00-9:30 AM to visit the monuments before the midday heat. Jemaa el-Fna is best visited at sunset (6:00-7:00 PM) when it comes alive. The Majorelle Gardens are most beautiful in the early morning with soft light.

Do entry tickets need to be booked in advance?

The Majorelle Gardens have limited capacity and can have 1-2 hour queues in high season. When booking with us, the guide manages priority access. Bahia Palace and the Saadian Tombs can also become crowded in summer.

Is it safe to go to the Marrakech souks?

Yes, the souks are safe, but without a guide it is common for vendors to approach and pressure you to enter their shops. With an official guide this does not happen: nobody bothers tourists who are accompanied, and you can enjoy the stroll in peace.

Can this be combined with other excursions from Marrakech?

Yes. The medina visit can be combined perfectly with the Marrakech 4-Day Tour with Agafay, or added as an extra day on the Ourika tour. It can also be combined with a hot air balloon flight in the morning and the medina visit in the afternoon.

Also visiting Fez?

Fez has the largest medieval medina in the world: Chouara Tanneries, Bou Inania Madrasa and Morocco's most authentic souks. Two imperial cities, two unique experiences.

"Jemaa el-Fna at sunset with the guide explaining who the Gnawa storytellers are... it was magical. Without a guide you would only have seen chaos. With him we saw living culture. Absolutely recommended."

"We went with our two kids aged 9 and 13. The Ben Youssef Madrasa looked like something from a film to them — like a Moroccan Hogwarts. The guide adapted the pace perfectly. We bought babouches without anyone pressuring us. Great."
