Quick Summary: The Best Times to Go
Morocco is a country of extreme climatic contrasts: from the cold of the snowy Atlas to the heat of the Sahara desert, through the mild Atlantic climate of Essaouira. There is no single "best time" for the whole country, but there are two optimal windows that work for most travellers:
The two ideal seasons
Spring (March–May): mild temperatures across the country, green landscapes, flowers in the Ourika Valley, pleasant desert mornings. Perfect for exploring all of Morocco.
Autumn (September–November): summer is over, tourists leave, prices drop and the weather is excellent again. Ideal for the Merzouga desert.
Month-by-Month Analysis
January
Cold in cities (8–15°C), snow on the Atlas. Desert pleasant during the day. Very few tourists, minimum prices. Good if you want peace and quiet.
February
Starting to warm up. Rose Festival in Kelaa M'Gouna. Almond trees in bloom. Good time before high season.
March ★
Spring begins. Perfect temperatures (18–24°C). Green landscapes. Start of moderate tourist season. Highly recommended.
April ★
The best month for Morocco. Flowers in valleys, perfect climate throughout the country, cool desert at night. Very popular: book in advance.
May ★
Still excellent. The desert starts to warm up but cities are perfect. The Ourika Valley is spectacular.
June
Rising heat (28–35°C in cities). Tourists on Atlantic beaches. Essaouira perfect. Desert starts to get tough.
July
Very hot inland (38–44°C). Only recommended for the Atlantic coast. Desert practically unbearable at noon.
August
The hottest month. Mass tourism on the coast. Stifling cities. Only recommended for Agadir or Essaouira. Avoid the interior.
September ★
The heat fades. Tourists leave. Desert returns to pleasant temperatures. Start of the best season for the south. Highly recommended.
October ★
Idyllic climate throughout the country. Desert Festival in Merzouga. Mid-season prices. Probably the second best month.
November ★
Still very pleasant. First light rains. Landscapes turn green. Few tourists, good prices. Perfect for the desert.
December
Mild winter in cities. Snow on the Atlas. Minimal festive atmosphere. Very quiet and affordable. Good desert during the day.
Best Time by Destination
Marrakech and the Imperial Cities
The ideal season is March to May and October to November. Summer is extremely hot (exceeding 40°C in July and August), making exploring the medina exhausting. Winter is mild and pleasant for walking, though restaurant terraces get cold at night.
Merzouga Desert and Southern Morocco
The desert works perfectly from October to April. In July and August the heat can exceed 47°C at noon, making camel excursions impossible. Nights at the camp are especially magical in winter: clear sky, cold requiring blankets and absolute silence.
Atlantic Coast (Essaouira, Agadir)
The Atlantic coast has a milder microclimate thanks to the influence of the ocean. June to September is perfect for the beach, with temperatures of 24–28°C. The wind in Essaouira is strong in summer, making it the world capital of windsurfing.
Ouzoud Waterfalls and Ourika Valley

Ramadan and Public Holidays: What You Need to Know
Ramadan in Morocco
Ramadan is a month of deep religious observance. During the day, many restaurants and cafés are closed, the pace of life changes and some attractions have reduced hours. However, the night-time atmosphere is spectacular: cities fill with families on the streets, music and festivity. If you travel during Ramadan, go with an open mind and respect local customs.
Ramadan is a lunar month that moves forward each year. In 2025 it was in March. Check exact dates before booking. Festivities such as Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha also affect service opening hours.
Prices by Season
- High season (March–April, Oct–Nov): highest prices. Booking 2–3 months in advance is essential, especially for popular riads.
- Mid season (February, May, September, December): good balance between climate and price. Ideal for flexible travellers.
- Low season (June–August, January): minimum prices, but extreme heat in July–August. January is a good option for those seeking peace and economy.
Booking tip
For the Marrakech–Merzouga 3-day tour, the October to November season sells out very quickly. Book at least 6–8 weeks in advance if you travel in that period.
Our Final Recommendation
If we could only choose one month, we would choose April: perfect climate across the country, flowers, green landscapes, cool desert and a special energy in the medinas. If April isn't possible, October is the best alternative with lower prices and fewer tourists.
