Marrakech is vibrant, cosmopolitan, with an almost electric energy. It is the tourism capital of Morocco: it has the best access to excursions, the desert, the most intense souks and the most sophisticated nightlife in the country.
Fez is the most authentic and historic city. Its medina, Fes el-Bali, is the largest and most intact medieval medina in the Arab world, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is more authentic, less touristy in its deeper layers, and much more labyrinthine.
