What to See in Chefchaouen
Complete Guide — The Blue City

The main square of Chefchaouen is the best place to start your visit. Surrounded by café terraces, the 15th-century kasbah and the Grand Mosque with its octagonal minaret. Lively at any hour and perfect for settling in with a mint tea.

The most photogenic neighbourhood in the city. Narrow stairways, flower pots, ornate doorways — everything painted in endless shades of indigo, sky blue and turquoise. The most Instagram-worthy corner in all of Morocco. Best early morning before the crowds.

Fortress built by Moulay Ali Ben Rachid in 1471. Today it houses a small ethnographic museum with Berber and Andalusian artefacts, and a tranquil inner garden. The towers offer panoramic views over the blue rooftops of the medina.

A 10-minute walk from the centre, the river rising from Jbel Tissouka runs alongside the medina. Women wash clothes on its banks, children play in the water, visitors cool off. A space of authentic local life far from the tourist circuit.

The octagonal minaret of the Grand Mosque is the architectural symbol of Chefchaouen. Unique in Morocco for its octagonal plan, said to have been built by Andalusian refugees in the 15th century. Viewable from outside only.

Chefchaouen's artisan market is famous for its wool weaving (djellabas, blankets), basketry and Rif crafts. Prices are better than in Fez or Marrakech and vendor pressure much lower. Excellent for buying authentic souvenirs.

A 30–40 minute climb behind the medina leads to a natural lookout commanding all of Chefchaouen and the Rif valley. The view is especially stunning at sunset when the blue rooftops glow orange.

The neighbourhood founded by exiles of the Spanish Reconquista in the 15th century. Its houses preserve Andalusian architecture: fountain courtyards, horseshoe arches and tilework. A piece of Moorish Spain preserved in the Moroccan Rif.

Inside the kasbah, the small museum chronicles the city's history from its founding, with Berber musical instruments, traditional Rif costumes and documents about the Andalusian and Jewish influence in the region.

30 km from Chefchaouen, the Akchour waterfalls are a hidden gem of Talassemtane Natural Park. Hiking through cedars and pines along the Farda River to turquoise cascades. One of the most spectacular excursions in northern Morocco.

On the route to the Akchour waterfalls, the "Bridge of God" is a natural rock arch over the river — a unique geological formation that locals named for its otherworldly beauty. A must if you're hiking in the area.

Ending the day at a traditional hammam is the best way to unwind after walking the medina. Several local hammams in Chefchaouen offer a Turkish bath and Berber massage for just a few dirhams. Ask at your riad.
